How a Money Journal can Transform Your Life

Are you a journaler? If you are like me, you may have stacks of old journals in a box somewhere. I love a journal. I love the process of writing, getting my thoughts out of my head onto paper. Buying a new one, with its clean cover and crisp pages. And I love the habit of starting my morning with my journal and a big cup of coffee.

I first started journaling when I took an Artist Way workshop almost 20 years ago. Julia Cameron, who wrote Artist Way, promoted Morning Pages - 3 pages of free-throw writing first thing after you wake up. While I have not always been consistent, I feel more grounded and clear about my life when I journal.

One thing I noticed in my journaling is I write a lot about my business. And about my money. I would plan out new ideas, make lists of what I needed to get done, figure out price points, and map out how I was going to achieve my money goals. I noticed that I did this to avoid writing about the “real” stuff, the personal feelings I really needed to be writing about. Yep, I’m the Queen of avoidance, and I found a way to do it in my journaling! So, that is how I birthed the Money Journal! I got a new journal and devoted that to my business and my money. And as I started to use this, I loved the fact I had all my thoughts and ideas about my business all in one place. I could plan out how I was going to achieve my goals, plan out my spending, write gratitude for what I had, and used my “As I “technique to project what I was going to become in my business.

There are SO many things you could use a Money Journal for! I truly believe that writing taps into a part of your subconscious. When you put pen to paper, you are able to get into a state of creativity and flow that you can’t when you are just thinking thoughts or speaking out loud. When you are in that creative flow, you are tapping into deep-seated ideas and feelings that are tucked away. So, what better way to help with our money mindset and your business desires than to tap into that subconscious! I invite you to start your own Money Journal. If it feels intimidating, just start by writing about your feelings about money. Since money is such a taboo subject, and not talked about with friends and family, here’s your chance to dive deep into how you really feel about money. Is there shame of past mistakes, regret for decisions made in the past, pride for achievements, and goals met?  As you continue the practice, more ideas will come to you.

Create a ritual for the time you spend writing in your journal. Will you do it every morning with your coffee, like I do, or perhaps when you first get to your desk for the day. Or maybe incorporate it into your evening routine.

The goal is to just write! As you write, you will create shifts in your thoughts around money, you will create changes in your stories, and you will tap into the flow of abundance and money. And by tapping into the energy of money, it just brings more to you and for you.

So, head on out and buy a beautiful new journal today and start writing about your money.
